Fans of authentic Greek and Mediterranean food will likely already be aware of Stefanos Greek Taverna, situated along Bournemouth Road between Branksome and Lower Parkstone in Poole. This charming eatery has been delighting its clients since 2004, serving up traditional meze and Greek recipes and popular dishes from its cosy setting.
A home from home
The restaurant offers a unique ‘Plaka’ style ambience based on the historical neighbourhood of Athens and providing a warm welcome that whisks you away to those more temperate climes all year ‘round! It is decorated with murals of the Islands, accompanied by atmospheric Greek music to set the scene.
The menu is authentic and extensive; a mix of ‘Mezedakia’ – small bites or Tapas, traditional Greek dishes including Moussaka, Kleftiko, Stifado and Souvlaki, chargrilled steaks, a selection of seafood and Stefanos’s own recipe Baklava for dessert.
The Mezedaki starters list is extensive, featuring all the classics including Tzatziki, Humus, Taramasalata, Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves), Feta and olives as well as more exotic choices like Tyropites feta pies and Loukaniko traditional village spicy sausage.
There are several Greek specialities on the main menu such as the Kleftiko slow cooked lamb shank, a traditional Stifado Greek stew and the Spetzofai rustic, spicy rice dish.
On the grill you’ll find the house special Steak Stefanos with a tomato and chilli sauce laced with Ouzo, pork, lamb or Stefanos souvlaki and Sikoti, which is pan fried slices of fresh lamb’s liver. Fish mains include Xifias grilled swordfish steak and Kalamari squid rings while vegetarians may enjoy the vegetable moussakas or lasagnia.
Even if you’re full to bursting after enjoying this rich and colourful menu, make sure you find room to sample Stefanos Taverna’s home-grown Baklava recipe – the traditional Greek sweet pastry with layers of flaky filo and drizzled with nuts, butter and syrup.
Stefanos is open on weekdays Tuesday to Thursday from 5:15 – 10pm and Fridays and Saturdays between 5:15 and 10:30pm. The restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
