A brief history
This grand, prime-positioned building actually started out as a terrace of four large mansion houses built back in 1873. These mansions never came to light, as within the course of the year a company was established to finish the work and open it up as a hotel called ‘Highcliffe Mansions.’ Highcliffe Mansions was soon attracting aristocratic patronage, unsurprising give its enviable cliff-top position and modern design.
During the 20th century the hotel expanded, with number 105 St Michael’s Road becoming an annexe of the hotel in 1920, a garage built behind and a two-floor extension. In 1925 a series of nine 1831 cottages, ‘Highcliffe Houses,’ formerly part of the Coastguard station, was acquired and a large six-bay extension added, giving the hotel a sea frontage of 500 feet.
During the Second World War, the hotel was requisitioned by the government and Canadian and American troops were billeted here. At the end of the war, the Highcliffe was acquired by international hotelier Auguste Wild and joined his luxury hotel brand. It changed its name to “Highcliff” in 1956 to avoid confusion with the nearby town of the same name – in fact there was a toss of a coin to decide which one would keep the ‘e’!
The hotel’s cliff-top swimming pool was created in the early sixties and the Highcliff was one of the first hotels in the country to receive a license extension to 2am for drinking and dancing. The conference centre was added in 1970 and made a name for itself hosting political conferences for all parties, trade union leaders and Prime Ministers including Clement Attlee, Harold Wilson, Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair.
The Whitbread PLC leisure and hotel group bought the Swallow Group in 1999, becoming owners of the Highcliff Hotel. The group had previously acquired the Marriott franchise in Britain and set about transforming the Highcliff to Marriott standards. Now the Bournemouth Highcliff Marriott Hotel, it has been fully managed by Marriott International since 2006.
