Still known to some as Castlemore Retail Park, and to locals as the site of the old bus station, Mallard Road Retail Park is somewhat of a hidden treasure just across the road from the popular Castlepoint shopping centre on Castle Lane.
The first clutch of businesses on Mallard Road Retail Park opened in 2007 and the site has been going from strength to strength ever since.
The Homebase store on one corner was fashioned from the old bus station’s Grade 2 listed garage with its distinctive humped roof. This store stocks homeware for all rooms of the house, decorating and building supplies, gardening goods and plants too. In fact, the old Trolleybus wash can still be found in the garden centre’s structure!
Next door JYSK, a popular Danish retail chain selling various ‘everything for the home,’ with household goods like mattresses, furniture and accessories. The store often runs some great deals, with some of its best offers piled temptingly on the forecourt.
Bensons for Beds is in Unit 3 and, as the name suggests, stocks beds of all nature and price points. The roomy showroom on two floors means that you can come and browse most of its stock ready assembled. The shop sells leading brands such as Slumberland, Silentnight, Sealy, iGen, Sleepmasters, Sensaform and Tempur and also provides a ‘comfort station,’ where you can determine the ideal mattress firmness for you.
Find a bargain
Next unit along is popular slash-price vendor Poundland, where much of its stock costs just £1 with some higher-priced but still bargain deals to be found. The wares on the shelves are largely seasonal but always piled high with incredible deals for washing, grooming, stationery, homeware, toys, kitchens, gardening, snacking, cooking and all other parts of your life.
Unit 5 was previously a BHS Home store but this unit is currently vacant pending new ownership. Its neighbouring retailer moves in in summer 2017 and will be popular German discount chain supermarket Aldi. Aldi stocks various groceries, fruit and vegetables, wines, store cupboard essentials and homewares and there’s often a special line or deal to catch your attention.
Carpetright is the next business along Mallard Road Retail Park. It stocks carpets and underlay, flooring accessories, vinyl, laminate and wood flooring and luxury vinyl tiles. It also sells artificial grass! The other string to its bow is beds; with a large stock of mattresses, pillows and protectors for good measure.
Electrical and computing force Currys and PC World occupy the next large unit along together with a branch of Carphone Warehouse, putting all your white goods, televisions and toasters, tablet computers, laptops and towers, smartphones, fitness trackers and sat navs under the same roof!
The final retailer along this u-shaped shopping complex is Smyth’s Toy Superstore; a relative newcomer to the park, having opened in September 2015, but a firm favourite for all the family. This huge toy emporium is the brand’s first foray into Dorset and is stocked ceiling-to-floor with computer games and consoles, cuddlies, board games. outside play equipment, dollies, robots, books, craft activities, musical instruments and more – plus a dedicated department for babies and toddlers, with nursery room furniture, car seats and activities.
Completing the park’s rich offer is a convenient stand-alone branch of Costa Coffee. There is plenty of room to pull up a pew and savour your brew (and inevitable cake!) or take it ‘to go’ to accompany the next leg of your shopping trip or to warm you through on the short stroll across the road to Castlepoint.
Bags of variety
Mallard Road can count a number of factors in its favour. It has a generous 500 car parking spaces, is home to a number of ‘one-off’ stores you won’t find elsewhere within a decent radius and also the fact you’ve got the means to completely kit out even the emptiest of home in the one place, without having to move the car!
So, come and take a stroll around Mallard Road Retail Park. If you’re looking for something particular, you’ll find a lot of things to tick off your list and many more you might not expect from this well-equipped and character-rich shopping venue.
