Bournemouth has a rich tradition of arts and events. So it’s no surprise that the annual Arts by the Sea festival is a real celebration of local talent and passion for art and performance, dance, music and film among many other genres.
Taking place across a full week in October, Arts by the Sea always offers a packed programme for fans of all artistic persuasions at various prices from absolutely free and looking for participants to £10+ for bigger theatrical bookings. The exhibits, installations and performances take over what seems the entire town, with venues including the Lower Gardens, Central Gardens, Bournemouth Square, Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre, the Bandstand, the Triangle, Pavilion Dance, the Pier, Bournemouth Seafront, Shelley Theatre, St Peter’s Church, The Old Fire Station, Horseshoe Common and Bournemouth Library throwing open their doors / arms to accommodate this spectacle. In fact, if you’re in town at any time during the festival, day or night, you’re bound to encounter some part of the event.
Over the week there are usually over 60 events to enjoy ranging from the spectacular to the downright curious, taking dance, film, music, visual art, literature, theatre, comedy and more to some of the town’s most popular – and most unexpected places!
The performance programme for 2017 included fire arts and effects, symphony orchestras and choirs, a mechanical heart installation, a mermaid in a sea sphere, a deep-sea fish on a bicycle, light installations, inflatable lobsters, illuminated puppets, a beach clean and waste art competition and a family rave!
