If you’re heading to Bournemouth’s beach or International Centre over the weekend of 7th to the 9th July you won’t fail to miss the hoards of athletic, Lycra-clad cheerleaders who descend on the town to take part in the prestigious Future Cheer Internationals.
This cheer and dance championships attracts cheer crews and teams from all over Europe competing for a place and funding to compete at the 2018 world cheerleading championships in Florida, USA.
Europe’s largest cheerleading and dance competition takes place over the course of the weekend in the BIC’s Windsor and Purbeck Halls, with teams competing on a full size sprung floor across various categories including tiny, mini, youth, special needs, junior, senior and stunt.
When they’re not in front of the judges, many of the teams spill out onto the beach just by the pier, where the golden sand provides a tempting surface for them to polish their most daring moves. Often there are big screens just on the prom showing the running order for teams who have fled the BIC for the beach and also showing competition highlights for those not attending the big event in person.
